Are you looking for a breathtaking panoramic view of San Diego and a little dose of nature while in Pacific Beach? Kate Sessions Park serves as a relaxing getaway in the middle of the urban area. The 79-acre park bordering Pacific Beach and La Jolla is an excellent spot for throwing around a frisbee, having a picnic, or going for a hike.

The park is named after Kate Session, a local botanist, horticulturalist, and landscape architect and was known as the “Mother of Balboa Park.” After urging the city to put a park on Mt. Soledad, they finally set aside land for the park and named it after her on her 100th birthday.

Activities to do at Kate Sessions

Kate Sessions Park has two separate areas allowing for many activities for all ages. In addition to the central grassy area, there is an extra 60-acres many people miss out on, filled with plants and wildlife.

Have a Picnic

The large grassy area with a panoramic view of San Diego creates a relaxing environment, perfect for a picnic. Bring your favorite blanket, some snacks, and a book so you can relax while you enjoy the view of San Diego and the Pacific Ocean. Kate Sessions Park is dog-friendly, so make sure to bring your partner-in-crime with you!

Go for a Hike

Not everyone who goes to Kate Sessions Park is aware of the additional 60-acres of nature. Separate from the maintained grassy area, there is a mile-long loop that has many offshoots formed by hikers and wildlife. This area is perfect for hiking and exploring nature. Hike this area with caution as this part of the park is not officially maintained, so the trail gets narrow at some points, and you may run into some wildlife animals like rabbits or snakes. Seeing all the wildlife living in the area will give you a perspective on how important urban parks are for wildlife.

Have a Cookout

The barbeque pits and picnic tables at Kate Sessions make it a great cookout spot with friends and family. There’s a playground consisting of swing sets and two jungle gyms in the park so your kids can stay entertained while you’re getting the food ready. The open area provides more than enough room for fun activities like throwing around a frisbee or kicking a soccer ball. Grill up some hotdogs and hamburgers while you watch the stunning sunset with your family and friends.

Enjoy the panoramic views of Mission Bay, Pacific Beach, La Jolla, and downtown San Diego from Kate Sessions. Don’t miss the opportunity to spend a day here while staying at the Pacific View Inn.
